Senior Citizen Center (SCC)
Ezrat Avot's Senior Citizen Center is at the heart of our programs and services, serving Jerusalem's neediest elderly, who live in abject poverty and isolation.
One in four of Israel's elderly live below the poverty line.

Seniors attend cultural and educational activities daily at the SCC such as learning groups, lectures, arts and crafts, music and aerobics classes, trips and outings.
A free, nutritious, hot lunch is served daily to the SCC's elderly clients.
18.3% of Israel's elderly are abused, mostly by family members and caregivers.

Ruth, aged 82., takes two buses every morning to reach Ezrat Avot's Senior Citizen Center. When a terrorist bus bombing occurred near her home one morning and Ruth did not appear at the Center, her SCC fellow members were so concerned that they asked us to call and check up on her. Ruth was grateful for the call, "I was on my way to the bus stop when I heard a big bang. After the shock I thought I should stay home today. But I'll be back tomorrow!"
Ruth says, 'I consider this center my home away from home".

Counseling and advocacy is also provided at the center to these seniors, who are often, lonely, abused, and exploited. Volunteers provide referrals to neighborhood social service agencies and intervention with government offices for basic entitlements, as well as simply offer a listening ear to stories of distress.
